ISU

The focus I would like you to take is in particular the interplay between:

Environment (Sustainability vs. Growth)
Economy (Jobs vs. unemployment/poverty)
Technology (new tools, ideas, and their effects)
Society (i.e. people, employment, etc.)

So for example, you could pick one topic:
Nigerian oil and subdivide the issue into the four above components as we did in our class example.
You don't necessarily need to break it down into sub-headings during your presentation, but you should make the connections between these different categories throughout your presentation.

  1. Hey Mr. Forsyth, I was wondering if I could change my topic to deforestation? And I was also wondering if that is too broad of a topic? I was planning on focusing on the amazon and doing a little about the CO2 emissions cutting down trees causes. Is that ok?

    1. Charlotte,
I'm ok with changing topics. I think deforestation in general is too broad a topic. I'd narrow it down to a particular region that needs to be preserved. Pick a region that is untouched. Stakeholders I'd look at: government, loggers, indigenous people, wildlife (and environmentalists). Pick a particular region in Brazil if you are interested in the Amazon. You could look at the Yanomani or another indigenous group as a starting point for regions which are threatened - people and forests are often connected. You could also look at border regions of Brazil/Bolivia/Peru/Ecuador/Venezuela etc. since that's where there is lots of corruption and lawlessness - regulations are often overlooked.
I'd love for someone in the class to cover the Enbridge Pipeline which includes the Great Spirit Bear Rainforest of B.C. Maybe more oil and energy related but it does pass through one of Canada's last untouched pieces of untouched forest and it's all over the media lately so there's no shortage of research material. I can point you to many sources on this topic if you like.

    2. I can do the Enbridge pipeline if no one else is doing it yet. I've finished my deforestation one but its a bit broad so I can use the info I already have if deforestation is a part of that topic.

    3. No one else has claimed it. It's yours (a bit late to be starting though - good luck!)
Start with a skim of the media. There are also many, many videos on youtube - also see the First Nations opposition and protests over the pipeline. Of course I will recommend a surf video called Tipping Barrels, where the riders discovered the controversy over the pipeline.
